Emergency Dentistry Q & A

What is an emergency dentist?

An emergency dentist treats dental and mouth injuries that need immediate attention. Emergency dental situations usually involve saving knocked-out or broken teeth. Visiting The Smile Artists within half an hour of your mouth or tooth injury gives you the best chance to save your tooth.

When should I call an emergency dentist?

Whenever you are concerned about a severe mouth injury or condition for yourself or a member of your family, it’s a good idea to seek immediate emergency dental care. These types of situations are generally considered dental emergencies:

  • Knocked-out teeth
  • A loose permanent tooth
  • Extreme mouth or tooth pain
  • Bleeding inside your mouth from your gums, cheeks, or tongue
  • An injury to your mouth or face
  • Swelling in your tongue, gums, or mouth
  • A severely broken or cracked tooth
  • A laceration or tear on your lips

Chipping a tooth in and of itself doesn't always warrant emergency dental care. If the tooth is chipped, but it doesn't appear as if you'll lose the tooth entirely, it's probably not a dental emergency. Even so, you can't go wrong by calling an experienced dentist at The Smile Artists. They're trained to handle dental emergencies and can walk you through what to do with your tooth until you can visit the office.

How should I handle a knocked-out tooth?

Act quickly, and there's a good chance you can save a knocked-out tooth. If you don’t receive immediate dental care, you may be at risk of losing the tooth. In this situation, clean both the injured tooth and inside your mouth. Rinse your mouth and tooth with lukewarm water. Avoid touching or holding the tooth's roots.

As you clean the tooth, hold it gently by the top, or crown. Never pick up your tooth from the root. If possible, try to place it back into the socket in your gum where it came out. Bite down softly on a gauze pad to hold the tooth in place until you can get to The Smile Artists. Call the office right away. Or, have a family member or friend call to let our staff know you're on your way.

If the tooth can't be replaced in the empty socket, place it in a small cup of cold milk. The milk will help preserve the roots until you can make it into the office. When you're facing a dental emergency, call The Smile Artists for expert assistance.
